Wildflower Wildfire to make debut with Botanically Brontë, A Literary Cocktail Experience at York Food and Drink Festival

WILDFLOWER Wildfire invites you to step in the world of Yorkshire’s scribbling siblings, the Brontës, for Botanically Brontë – A Literary Cocktail Experience at Friargate Theatre, Lower Friargate, York, on September 25.

This original immersive theatre event blends storytelling, performance and botanical drinks in a journey through the seasons alongside Charlotte, Anne, Emily and Branwell Brontë, exploring their lives, relationships and literary legacy.

“Across the performance, audiences will be served four specially created botanical cocktails, each inspired by a different season and member of the Brontë family, from the bright florals of Elastic Springs to the bittersweet Last Winter Rose,” says event creator Xandra Logan, York actress, writer and producer – and barrister to boot – who has moved into theatre development to make this 90-minute piece for this autumn’s York Food and Drink Festival.

Incorporating bespoke cocktails as part of the package, “there will be both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options to suit audience preference”.

The cast comprises Vicki Glover as Charlotte Brontë; Xandra Logan as Emily Brontë; Leah Paige as Anne  Brontë; Katie Leckey as Branwell Brontë; Adam Marsdin as Patrick Brontë; Miles John as Arthur Bell Nicholls; Laura Haynes Bury as Martha Brown and Molly Meleady-Hanley as The Phantom.

Drawing on her Yorkshire roots, Xandra is “delighted to portray Emily and explore her fierce imagination, independence and connection to the landscape that shaped her work.”

Her latest role follows screen appearances in Cut Deep, Closing Time and Before The Leaves Turn and the title role on stage in Mary Rose.

Vicki Glover trained on the RADA Foundation course and is completing her BA (Hons) Acting studies at Manchester School of Theatre. Acting professionally since the age of 14, her credits include Shrek 2, The Murder Trial Live, The Manson Family Massacre and Operation Sparrowhawk. “After portraying Emily Brontë, Catherine Earnshaw and Catherine Linton previously, I’m delighted to return to the Brontë world as Charlotte,” she says.

West Yorkshire actress Leah Paige, who has experience across stage and screen, will play Anne. “Passionate about bringing overlooked stories to life, I’m thrilled to portray the often-underestimated Anne Brontë, celebrating her quiet strength, kindness and unwavering principles,” says Leah, who will make her feature debut on Amazon Prime later this year.

Northern Irish actor and director Katie Leckey (they/them), who will play Branwell Brontë, holds an MA in Theatre-Making from the University of York and is co-founder and artistic director of York company Griffonage Theatre, for whom they perform, write and direct.

Their credits include A Kingdom Jack’d (Merchant Adventurers’ Hall), Shakespeare and Rome (York Museums Trust/York International Shakespeare Festival), Queer Spaces (York Theatre Royal/Stephen Joseph Theatre), Dung Beetle Dan (Thunk-It Theatre, Deer Shed Festival) and The Courteous Enemy (Edinburgh Fringe).

“I’m looking forward to giving a voice to the often-underrepresented Branwell and bringing his poetry to life in Botanically Brontë,” says Katie.

Last seen on stage in York in Party Piece at Theatre@41, Monkgate. and as Dr Little in Goodnight Mister Tom at Harrogate Theatre, Adam Marsdin will play Patrick Brontë. Alongside numerous film credits across Yorkshire, he presents Pantheon Mythology, trains at NGA Leeds and is an Equity member.

Miles John, a professional actor raised in Scarborough and trained at UCA Farnham, is cast as Reverend Arthur Bell Nicholls. Working across stage, screen and voiceovers, his credits include Watch Me Die (Edinburgh Fringe), Loot (York Theatre Royal), The Grieving Stones (feature film), For King And Country (short film) and Pipistrelle Pipistrelle (radio drama).

Laura Haynes-Bury’s role will be Martha Brown. “I have particularly enjoyed exploring Martha as the eyes and ears of the Brontë household, offering an intimate glimpse into the family’s lives,” says Laura, whose credits include Till The Stars Come Down for York Actors Collective and various site-specific theatre performances.

Molly Meleady-Hanley: Appearing as The Phantom in Botanically Brontë

After graduating from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama with an MA in Advanced Theatre Practice, Sheffield-born actor and playwright Molly Meleady-Hanley will play The Phantom.

Her credits include Bigmouth at the Courtyard Theatre, London, as part of Camden Fringe, a self-written production at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre, and feature film Fritz And Matlock with Invisible Engine Films. “I’m excited to explore the world of the Brontës and sisterhood in Botanically Brontë as The Phantom,” she says.

REVIEW: York Shakespeare Project in Sonnets In Bloom, Holy Trinity churchyard, Goodramgate, York, until Saturday ****

SONNETS In Bloom 2025 is the ninth iteration of York Shakespeare Project’s summer sonnet celebration. Make that Sonnets In Full Bloom at the flower fete in the churchyard of Holy Trinity, Goodramgate,  where the emphasis is on the new.

New director, Josie Connor; new scenario writer Natalie Roe; nine debutants among the 12 sonneteers; seven Shakespeare sonnets making their YSP bow among the 13 featured here.

Welcomed with a complimentary drink, the audience takes its place on benches and seats arranged in circular fashion around the churchyard, to the muffled accompaniment of evening street sounds from Goodramgate’s restaurants and bars.

YSP’s Sonnets have taken myriad forms: sonnet walks around the city centre and Dean’s Park; sit-down sonnets under Covid social distancing; sonnets in the Bar Convent gardens. Holy Trinity, favourite York church of the loved-up Anne “Gentleman Jack” Lister, has been a regular host, and this time war, more than love, is in the air.

More specifically, an alternative version of the war of the roses breaks out among the competitors in a fractious regional leg of Summer In Bloom. Given the profusion of puns among Roe’s humorous character names, perhaps it could be renamed Punfight At The OK Floral. Hoe hoe.

First of those horticultural names is the cactus-loving Reverend Planter (Sonnets’ debutant Harry Summers in genial mood), who will oversee the “arrival of participants with their prized entries, some more competitive than others. But where is the special guest? And who will win the People’s Vote?” All in good time, all in good time, although all will be revealed within a fast-moving hour.

Under YSP’s format, each colourful character will move seamlessly from amusing introductory scene/mood/motive-setting chatter – either with a fellow character or breaking down theatre’s fourth wall in direct address to Rev Planter’s flock – to performing an apt sonnet from Shakespeare’s repertoire of 154. In the vicar’s case, “When I Consider Everything  That Grows”.

The sonnets, the characters, the names, keep a’coming. Next, James Tyler’s Tom Martow, proud Yorkshire marrow connoisseur (“to marrow, and to marrow, and to marrow”). Then Stuart Lindsay’s gravely serious Scottish sexton Doug O’Grafves, dour digger of depths and confirmed misanthropist.

Next comes the interplay of returnee Grace Scott’s May Blooms, fantastic flower arranger and generational rose grower; Lily Geering’s Lily White, unfailing friend to May; Benjamin Rowley’s Pete Shoveller, poet and patient but tongue-tied pursuer of Lily, and Sonnets returnee Emilie Knight’s Rose Thorn, May’s ruthless rival. Annie Dunbar’s Blossom Springs, conscience-stricken apprentice to Rose, becomes entangled in the floral furore too.

Tipsy-topsy-turvy encounter with wine: Xandra Logan’s Inny Briation

Bubbling away is the intrigue of the appearance/non-appearance of Stuart Green’s Freddie Firm-Carrot, celebratory gardening superstar. In a running joke, Tom Langley’s Ally Lottment, disdainful PA  to Firm-Carrot, keeps being mistaken for his absent boss, before Firm-Carrot turns up at last, his lack of interest in his brief for the day indicated by calling Goodramgate “Goodramsgate”.

Debutant Oliver Taylor catches the eye with his lovelorn Arti Choke, kitchen warlock and broken-hearted forager, while returnee Xandra Logan makes the most of the boozed-up indiscretions of Inny Briation, home winemaker and anywhere, anytime wine-drinker.

Connor directs with momentum and a sense of mischief, matching the fun in Roe’s script, and fittingly the whole cast assembles for the final sonnet, delivering one line each of “That Time Of Year Thou May’st In Me Behold”, book-ended by a joint first and last line in a communal floral finale.

REVIEW: York Actors Collective, Tiger Country, Theatre@41, Monkgate, York ****

TIGER Country is drama on the cutting edge, taking its title from the term used by a surgeon when conducting an operation near a major blood vessel.

Hospital dramas are two a penny on TV, whether made in the UK or imported from the USA and beyond. They are, however, a lesser spotted breed of theatre: York Actors Collective director Angie Millard could recall Peter Nicholls’s 1969 black comedy The National Health, but nothing since.

It would be too much of a stretch to include the 1997 musical version of Jekyll & Hyde or Dr Frank N Furter in Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

What’s more, Nina Raine’s focus falls on the doctors and nurses, rather than the patients, whose stories tend to be front and centre in the TV shows.

Premiered at the Hampstead Theatre in 2011, and last performed at the same London theatre in 2014, Tiger Country receives its belated York premiere this week, reaffirming Millard’s knack for reactivating works that may otherwise have escaped our attention,  in her desire to bring more political, thought-provoking theatre to the York stage.

After Joe Orton’s Entertaining Mr Sloane, Alexander Zeldin’s slice of agitprop Beyond Caring and Millard’s adaptation of J M Barrie’s rediscovered 1920 supernatural drama Mary Rose, now Millard matches Raine’s meticulous research in her theatrical representation of operations and procedures.

She calls them “mimes”, but they have the feel of authenticity, albeit making allowance for being in a theatre, not a hospital theatre.

Millard has drilled into her cast the need for speed at all times, on entries and exits, to match the hectic day in a life of a hospital for her “most challenging production” to date.

Drawing on her extensive research observing daily practice in hospitals in London, West Sussex, Staffordshire and Oxford,  and her interviews with candid doctors, Raine favours quick scenes, in keeping with TV and film editing.

In turn, Millard uses hospital signs, and sometimes video footage, to denote a change from  A & E to the Doctors’ Mess to the Consultant’s Room with the minimum fuss on an open-plan set where beds, a desk, mess chairs, a wheelchair and a CPR dummy are whizzed on and off.

All human life (and death) is here amid the badinage and the bandages. As Millard observes in her programme note, “what shines through is the humanity needed to be an NHS worker in today’s world”, one she she updated to post-Covid times. Humanity is shown in both a good and a bad light, not least in the machinations of the NHS, where medics and surgeons argue over procedure and protocol, to the detriment of patients.

Victoria Delaney’s consultant, uncompromising and demanding in a male-dominated  environment, stands out. Friction sparks in the mess, especially between Laurence O’Reilly’s cynical medic and Xandra Logan’s restless trainee doctor, whereas Chris Pomfrett’s unflappable consultant always suggests a good night’s sleep is the solution to any problem.

Lucinda Rennison, Mick Liversidge and Clare Halliday multi-role play with impressive diversity, and Madusha Fernando brings humour when most needed.

Teamwork is everything in the play and performance alike, but with individual will having a huge impact too, both positive and negative. When Delaney’s consultant has to inform Liversidge’s cancer patient that he is dying, a chill stillness takes over Theatre@41. Theatre at its most powerful, when even medicine is powerless to change life’s path.

REVIEW: York Actors Collective in J M Barrie’s Mary Rose, York Theatre Royal Studio ****

ALFRED Hitchcock wanted to turn “the strangeness” of J M Barrie’s supernatural drama Mary Rose into a film with Tippi Hedren in the title role (but Universal Studios thwarted him).

The 1920 drama featured in the Guardian theatre critic Michael Billington’s list of Forgotten Plays. “I still think the play is due for rediscovery,” he wrote in August 2020, having seen the Hebridean ghost story 48 years earlier starring Mia Farrow in Manchester.

Now York Actors Collective grant him his wish in their third production, adapted and directed by artistic director Angie Millard for their York Theatre Royal Studio debut.

Angie’s mother called it one of her favourite plays, drawn to the “beautiful, charming story” at a long-gone performance in Sheffield. In turn, Angie wanted to explore why.

Here is the result, wherein she has, in her words, “severely adapted” Barrie’s text. “I have adapted the piece to suit contemporary audiences and offer a little more explanation than JM Barrie provided,” she explains in her programme note.

CharlesHutchPress is delighted to report that every decision was right, starting with the haunted manor house being relocated to Yorkshire, from Sussex, to bring it uncomfortably close to home for York audiences.

Millard has changed the structure too, from three acts with two intervals to three scenes pre-interval, then two more after the break, tightening the running time to increase the dramatic tension of a ghost story timed to coincide with Halloween. [On that theme, the lighting designer could not have a more apt name than Peter Howl!]

Spanning 41 years, taking in two World Wars and major changes in British society, Millard’s dramatisation opens in the Yorkshire house in 1950, where the furniture is covered in dust sheets and Beryl Nairn’s Mrs Ottery looks as white as one of those sheets as she leads Chris Pomfrett’s grizzled former soldier, Harry, into the drawing room.

He is the “lost boy” of the piece, needing to settle matters in his troubled mind from his past before returning to Australia (the ever-detailed Pomfrett giving him Aussie inflexions to acknowledge his time spent there), but Mrs Ottery is reluctant to let him into the next room. Is she in there, he asks. The aforementioned ghost.

The ashen Mrs Ottery departs, Harry falls asleep in the corner chair, whereupon the past comes alive, opening in 1909 as pipe-smoking Tony Froud and Victoria Delaney’s ever-so Edwardian Mr and Mrs Morland are discussing daughter Mary Rose (Xandra Logan), who has taken to her regular hiding place, the apple tree.

We shall learn that Mary Rose is young for her age, always wanting to play games. Her behaviour would now be called autistic, suggested Millard in her CharlesHutchPress interview, and when Simon (Laurence O’Reilly), a man in his 40s, seeks her hand in marriage at 18, the Morlands feel the need to reveal her past. Namely her childhood disappearance on an Hebridean island, returning out of thin air a month later with no recollection or explanation.

She will vanish again on a visit with her husband, only to turn up at the Morland house years later. Everyone else has aged, but she looks the same. (Whereas Barrie’s Peter Pan refuses to grow up, his Mary Rose simply doesn’t.)  

Your reviewer last saw Xandra Logan (or ‘Alexandra’ as she was credited in the cast list) as un uppity fledgling actress, Lily, in York Shakespeare Project’s Summer Sonnets in August, and here she comes on leaps and bounds as Mary Rose, outwardly young in physical appearance and manner but internally damaged by the loss of her young son in Barrie’s intense study of mother-love (drawing on his own experience as a neglected child).

 Millard has cast well throughout, from Nairn’s haunted figure in black to Joy Warner’s ever-concerned, philosophical Scottish gillie, Cameron; O’Reilly’s stern, earnest Simon to Clare Halliday’s Molly, the Morland’s supportive friend.

As much through what is not said as is said, Froud and Delaney capture the frictions and schisms of a couple struggling with parenting skills behind their Edwardian airs.

Pomfrett, delightfully irascible as a shamelessly corrupt police chief in Black Treacle Theatre’s Accidental Death Of An Anarchist only a fortnight ago, is a darker soul here, restless and questing as he bookends Barrie’s disturbed time play.

His closing scene of reconciliation with Logan’s Mary Rose is beautifully judged in tone by both players, bringing to a close this classy production of Barrie’s intriguing, strange, beguiling tale of liminal mystery, mother-and-son bonds, the burdens of loss and laying ghosts to rest.

What a shame that Hitchcock’s film plans hit a hitch but thankfully York Actors Collective have brought this Mary Rose back to the surface, revealing anew its  hidden treasures.
