The 1800s’ Romantic movement began as a rebellion: against empire, industry and the mechanisation of the soul. Yorkshire became the epicentre of its rebellion.
Tonight’s storytelling stage show by spoken-word poet, author and comic Pete Bearder, alias Pete the Temp, fuses scholarship with music, comedy and poetry. Witness a spellbinding history of riot, repression and psychedelic experimentation.

Pete is a former Hammer & Tongue UK Poetry Slam champion and has performed in more than 15 countries with organisations that include the British Council. His live show combines poetry with human-beatbox, stand-up poetry and experimental sound poetry. His solo performances often incorporate loop machines and FX machinery or come in the form of multimedia performance lectures.
Bangladeshi-Geordie spoken-word poet,storyteller and creative practitioner Tahmina Ali is tonight’s support act. Rooted in lived experience, her work cuts through silence with honesty, tenderness and political edge as she explores identity, belonging, motherhood, mental health and cultural inheritance through a distinctly northern lens.
