MIKHAIL Lim played Georg in York Stage Musicals’ northern premiere of Spring Awakening at the Vaudeville Theatre, Joseph Rowntree School, York, in November 2010.
Roll forward to May 19 2026 when his startling production of Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s rock musical was launched with a 20th Anniversary Preview Event, 20 years to the day since the off-Broadway premiere opened at the Atlantic Theater Company in New York City.
Entry came with a tote bag emblazoned with a lyric from the show. Inside were a notepad and pen (tools for the reviewers, received gratefully) and a Welcome note from Inspired By Theatre, the York company fast establishing a reputation for injecting thrilling new life into landmark musicals.

“What you are about to witness is a production that aims to honour the heart and spirit of Spring Awakening whilst bringing fresh and contemporary ideas to the piece through thrust staging, actor-musicianship, expressive movement and an intimate, visceral approach to storytelling,” the statement read, emphasising the desire to highlight the kinetic musical’s continued relevance two decades later.
Your reviewer would argue that Sheik and Sater’s raucous musical take on Frank Wedekind’s late-19th century play has taken on even more resonance in those 20 years. The original play’s controversial themes of rape, abortion, teenage suicide, gay first love and adolescent sexual discovery led to Spring Awakening being judged too scandalous to perform in Wedekind’s lifetime, with no public performances until November 1906.

Wedekind was damning the lack of birds & bees tuition and protection provided both by hand-washing and wringing parents and teachers when faced by their young charges’ burgeoning sexual feelings and search for identity. Now, the world has gone the other way, in the era where social media and the dark web provides a tsunami of information, but teenagers can still feel overwhelmed.
Spring Awakening – such an apt title – is a devastating, dark musical of youthful yearning rubbing up against austere learning in the strict schooldays of 1891 Germany. Part play, part punk concert, it comes suited and booted with strong language (the best song is called Totally ****ed) and scenes of a sexual nature (staged with the involvement of intimacy co-ordinator Lina Glissman, by the way).
In a tale of sex & drudge & shock’n’roll, company founder Dan Crawfurd-Porter swaps directorial duties for the Hamlet-echoing role of piercingly bright, free-thinking, atheist, rebellious student Melchior, sharing centre stage with Rianna Louise’s awakening young flower Wendla and Eryn Grant’s tormented, workaholic, tragic Moritz.

Spring Awakening is above all a wake-up call to the damage that ignorance imposes on young people in a sexually repressive era, here represented by the multiple stultifying roles of the Adult Woman (Gemma McDonald) and Adult Men (Stefan Michaels). Righteous, religious, blinkered, they rule by book and sometimes by belt.
The combination of Gi Vasey’s thrust set design, placing the audience close up, and musical director Jessica Viner’s band of keys, drum and string players, bolstered by guitar and piano/bass/Cajon-playing actor-musicians, gives even more intensity to the already heightened drama.
Vasey places a bare tree stump at the back, draped in ribbons, complemented by bare branches to either side. In the centre is a sand pit, framed in stones, that serves as school playground and field and transfers to a school room with the aid of chairs. The sand is of the shifting variety, in keeping with sense of seismic change, of matters going beyond balance and control.

Freya McIntosh’s choreography matches the anger and frustration of the modern yet instantly timeless songs, breaking out of the formal lines and restrictive behaviour of the classroom for free, explosive expression, often with a microphone in the hand (a style of presentation later seen in Six The Musical).
Julie Fisher’s costume designs, with green school uniforms for the boys and a more diverse palette for the girls’ dresses, work well with Daniel Grey’s lighting design, and Will Nicholson’s sound design blends band and actor-musicians with clarity.
Eryn Grant is particularly impressive as the crushed Moritz, while Crawfurd-Porter’s Melchior has an edge to him, contrasting with the innocence of curiosity of Rianna Louise’s Wendla.

Skye Pickford’s Ilse, with her stillness of presence, JJ Thornton’s Hanschen and Maz Nachif’s Martha catch the eye too, performing in tandem with Oskar Nuttall’s Ernst, Lewis Jordan’s Georg, Kailum Farmey’s Otto, Ines Campos’s Thea and Greta Piasecka in a schoolroom cast that has uniformity but bags of individuality too.
Drawing so strikingly on German Expressionism and folkloric imagery, Mikhail Lim has delivered a shattering, alarming, agitated, impassioned Spring Awakening, reaffirming Inspired By Theatre as a major player, a welcome upstart, on York’s theatre scene.

SOUTH Central Los Angeles-born singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jerron Paxton’s lived-in voice and California drawl underpin a stripped-down concoction of blues, ragtime, folk and old-time Black music styles that originated nearly a century ago, as heard on his latest album, Things Done Changed, released on Smithsonian Folkways in 2024.
“I write and sing about the culture I come from. It seems a bit neglected,” says New York-based Paxton, who plays guitar, banjo, piano and violin. INSPIRED By Theatre will mark the 20th anniversary of Spring Awakening’s May 19 off-Broadway debut at the Atlantic Theater Company in New York City with a typically bold actor-musician production at Theatre@41, Monkgate, York, from May 20 to 23.
Continuing the York company’s modus operandi of presenting bravura interpretations of established works, Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s Tony Award-winning rock musical will be directed by Mikhail Lim, 15 years after he appeared in York Stage Musicals’ northern premiere at the Vaudeville Theatre, Joseph Rowntree School, York.
Following artistic director Dan Crawfurd-Porter’s ambitious staging of Jesus Christ Superstar in February, Lim picks up the reins for one of the most powerful and emotionally raw musicals of the modern era.

“Spring Awakening came out when I was almost exactly the age of the characters,” says Mikhail. “It completely opened my eyes to different forms of musical storytelling and the kind of contemporary theatre I fell in love with.
“Being part of the northern premiere in York 15 years ago [in November 2010] was incredibly special. Now, on the 20th anniversary of the original off-Broadway production, it feels extraordinary to be returning to this piece as a director. In many ways, it feels like fate.”
Mikhail adds: “This show has been in pre-production since November 2024, after we acquired the rights. We’ve waited until the right time, with the right crew, the right cast, at the perfect time, and that time has arrived.”

Based on Frank Wedekind’s 1906 play, Spring Awakening follows a group of late-19th century teenagers in a small German village, navigating the confusion, curiosity and turmoil of adolescence in a rigid and repressive society at odds with their awakening sexuality.
As these young people search for answers about sex, identity and self-expression, their world collides with an oppressive culture imposed by teachers and parents determined to silence them.
In a show whose themes including sexual assault, suicide, abortion and physical abuse, Crawfurd-Porter swaps directorial duties for playing Melchior opposite Rianna Louise’s Wendla.

“We’ve known each other for pretty much three years, starting out as cast mates, then Dan directed me and now I’m directing Dan, so we have this symbiotic relationship,” says Mikhail. “It comes from having similar tastes in artistry, and along with choreographer Freya McIntosh, we instinctively understand what kind of theatre we want to do.”
Dan says: “After the demands of directing Jesus Christ Superstar, I looked to Mikhail to fill my shoes for Spring Awakening, but then the temptation to audition for Melchior was too much.”
Why? “First of all, I love the show, and how unique it is, so, the chance to perform in it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” says Dan. “It requires young actors, which I’m not going to be able to play at some point, and it’s a role that resonates with me.

“It’s not unique to me, as most will struggle with that journey from adolescence to adulthood: the whole thing of puberty and sex and the pressure to be successful, making much more of it then you do when you’re older – and this captures all that so well.”
Rianna says: “Spring Awakening is my favourite show, though I’ve never seen it live. I was part of that online generation that really got into it through YouTube as it was such a cult success. I love how it’s so truthful about what it talks about and I love Wendla’s character. It’s a poignant story of sex and relationships but also of women’s reproductive health, which is still an interesting subject.”
Combining Sheik’s music with Sater’s book and lyrics, the show blends alternative rock, folk and punk influences with a deeply human coming-of-age story. Scenes unfold with grounded realism before erupting into powerful musical numbers that reveal the characters’ inner thoughts and emotions.

Mikhail will be using a cast of 13, a size that requires every performer to play a vital role in bringing the story to life, as he explains: “This show demands performers who can truly act through song and move with real emotional honesty. We’ve assembled a phenomenal company of performers who bring enormous passion and skill to the stage.”
Movement and physical storytelling will play a central role in the production. McIntosh’s choreography blends contemporary dance with expressive theatrical movement, creating moments that feel less like traditional choreography and more like living visual art unfolding on stage. The show’s band will form part of the storytelling, with a mixture of professional musicians and actor-musicians creating a dynamic on-stage musical presence.
Mikhail’s production will take place in the John Cooper Studio at Theatre@41, creating an intimate and immersive environment where audiences are placed close to the action. “The black-box setting allows the production to feel particularly visceral,” he says.

MARTHA’S Vineyard, Massachusetts singer-songwriter Willy Mason has been writing, recording and touring for 25 years, ever since his home demo of breakout single Oxygen became an unexpected hit. CREATIVES from around the heart of East Yorkshire are opening their doors to the public for a weekend celebration of the arts.
Pocklington Area Open Studios (PAOS) has rapidly become one of the premier events of its kind, this year featuring 30 artists at 19 locations, drawing visitors from far and wide.
This weekend’s art trail celebrates quality craftsmanship in its many forms, including painting, ceramics, printmaking, textiles, jewellery, sculpture and photography.
Visitors can meet a diverse and welcoming group of makers and painters in person, many in their own studios and creative surroundings.

WARNING: “This production contains intense scenes, frightening imagery, stylised violence and themes of death and religious conflict,” states the Joseph Rowntree Theatre website. Parental discretion and a minimum age of 12 are advised.
Such are the signs of 21st century times, whereas it is hard to imagine that 14th century York Mystery Plays performances would have been accompanied by such sensitivities. Or in 1951, when the plays were first revived, or indeed in 1971, when Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s debut musical was premiered on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York City.
Now comes Inspired By Theatre’s radical, boundary-pushing vision in old York city in rain-saturated 2026, one that has a rawness, frankness and starkness that emphasises why our more sensitive world labels emotional experiences in such cautionary terms.

After such startling shows as Green Day’s American Idiot in 2024 and RENT in 2025, company founder Dan Crawfurd-Porter now directs the York company in Jesus Christ Superstar, the Seventies’ hippy musical in which he made his debut as Peter for Ripon Operatics in 2021.
As with American Idiot and RENT, his directorial style is visceral, the drama confrontational, the ensemble bond so strong among his cast as he delivers on his promise of a “gritty, cinematic and unapologetically powerful” show.
“What defines this production is its intensity,” said Crawfurd-Porter in his CharlesHutchPress interview. “Our staging is bold, the choreography [by assistant director Freya McIntosh] demands everything from the cast, and the individual performances are so powerful. There’s no coasting, no safe choices.”

Without recourse to technological trickery or projections, Crawfurd-Porter puts his trust in physicality, movement, bold lighting (by Daniel Grey) and contrasting costume (lighter colours for the good, dark for the villains of the piece, from Judas to Pilate, Herod to Caiaphas and Annas).
As trailed in his remarkably striking publicity photographs, make-up is all important too, just as it was for David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane, bringing internal character to the surface and providing spectacle when Gi Vasey’s set of moveable, plain building blocks is designed to have more impact through shape-shifting, becoming temple-of-doom towers around Pilate, Caiaphas and Annas, seating for Jesus’s followers or a battle ground when “belief spirals into chaos, power corrupts, and humanity collides with the divine”.
The raised central dais is not ideal for McIntosh’s choreography when calling on the cast to move across the stage at pace in the opening number, enforcing some awkward leaps and landings, but from then on, the ensemble work has momentum, climaxing with Act Two’s title number.

Movement matters – and flows well under Crawfurd-Porter’s direction – but this sung-through rock opera stands or falls on the strength of its singing; after all, Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan sang Jesus’s part on the original 1970 concept album.
Iain Harvey hits the high notes spectacularly with absolute assurance while bringing grace and fervour to Lloyd Webber and Rice’s somewhat morose depiction of Jesus. You sense his burden, brought here to save the world and to sacrifice himself for God on the cross. In the one passage where Jesus speaks, perhaps too exhausted to sing, unlike in opera’s finales, he cries out to his mother: the moment that reinforces what a devastating performance Harvey has given.
In Crawfurd-Porter’s most inspired casting, the treacherous role of Judas goes to Kelly Ann Bolland, whose prowess as a classic rock musician “with a strong affinity for music driven by raw energy and power” drives her outstanding performance, singing Heaven On Their Minds. Judas’s Death and the climactic Superstar with harrowing, turbulent vigour, even venom. At the same, the hand rubbing, the awful realisation of the consequence of Judas’s actions, recall Shakespeare’s Lady Macbeth.

Rianna Pearce’s Mary (Magdalene) impresses too, from leading Everything’s All Right to bringing heartfelt candour to chart hit I Don’t Know How To Love Him and revitalising Could We Start Again Please? with Richard Bayton’s substantial, volatile Peter.
Joseph Hayes’s basso profondo is suitably deep and dark for Caiaphas, joined in condemnation of Jesus by Gi Vasey’s Annas and Josh Woodgate’s exasperated, hand-washing Pilate, while Mickey Moran pops up from lead guitar duty in the orchestra pit for a scene-stealing, ultra-thespian, heavy-metal frontman cameo in King Herod’s Song. Kailum Farmery’s Simon leaps to the fore in Simon Zealotes, his tattoos and shaved cranium providing a bridge to modern times.
Lloyd Webber and Rice cut their musical teeth on Jesus Christ Superstar and musically it is very much a rock opera of its Seventies’ time, more direct, more thrusting, more emotionally in your face than their later works.

Mathew Peter Clare’s musical direction captures that thrill of an early work, one that predates the classical embellishments of Lloyd Webber’s later arrangements and whose songs would have fitted early editions of The Old Grey Whistle Test. You will love the moment too where the instruments fall silent for an a cappella finale too.
What’s the buzz, tell me what’s a’happening? Inspired By Theatre have once more delivered exhilarating musical theatre with purpose, passion and panache.

Penesthilia, by Penny Marrows
TO mark the opening of Penny Marrows and J P Warriner’s posthumous exhibition at City Screen Pictiurehouse, Penny and artist Timothy Morrison’s son, London jazz guitarist Billy Marrows, performs tomorrow with Portuguese Young Musician of the Year 2025 Teresa Macedo Ferreira, supported by lutenist Simon Nesbitt. Admission is free.
The exhibition launch follows at 6pm, celebrating two late York artists whose paintings were never exhibited in their lifetimes.
Born in 1951, Penny grew up in Tockwith, west of York, and attended Mill Mount Grammar School for Girls before studying 2D and 3D art at York College, training as a sculptor, then taught art in prisons and adult education in London.
On returning to Yorkshire, she painted and drew trees, landscapes and portraits for 30 years, including her self-portrait as an heroic winged figure.
Her exhibition is curated by husband Timothy Morrison, York artist and teacher, who says: “I met her in a printmaking evening class in Brixton, where Penny made linocuts and engravings of alarmingly aggressive-looking mythical beasts.
“Billy came along…and as a teenager fell in love with the guitar and jazz, and went on to study at Royal Academy of Music.
“Fast forward to early 2023 when Penny was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Billy started sending little video recordings of his music to cheer her up (and me). New compositions, and duets with Teresa [Macedo Ferreira].

“The Beech Tree had its premiere at Penny’s funeral, and some of these pieces became Billy’s first album, Penelope, released soon after in her memory. So far it’s raised almost £7,000 for World Child Cancer.”
In 2025, Penelope was shortlisted in the category of Best New Album in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards. “Penny doesn’t know about all this, nor that thanks to Billy’s music her paintings have had an extraordinary resurrection.
“The trauma of the illness, combined with major retro-refit work in the house, meant that the paintings were buried in the chaos. We found them at the back of a huge pile. First exhibited at the funeral, they’ve since gone round the world beautifully emblazoned on Billy’s album covers.”
Penny loved trees, especially walking through woods. “The paintings seemed to burst from nowhere at the time, almost with a secretive devil-may-care diffidence, but are actually distillations of detailed observational sketchbook drawings done in the Howardian Hills while we collected wood for our stove,” says Timothy.
“Her early notebooks tenderly catch details of family life in Tockwith with an almost Bonnard-like natural draughtsmanship. My garden is a beautiful sculpture garden.
“If Penny is anywhere, she’s in the trees, both in the paintings and out there. Her work inspires my own drawings; I think of her as Daphne and I often depict her as a bird perched humorously and enquiringly on her very own branch.
“I would like to thank Richard Kitchen, who greatly encouraged me to curate this show of Penny’s work, and for making it possible.”
J P Warriner’s work Untitled, featuring in Navigators Art’s exhibition
BORN in Ireland in 1935, J P (John)Warriner lived most of his life in York, where he died in 2019 aged 84. “He has no surviving family or partner,” says Navigators Art’s Richard Kitchen. “Research indicates he was a brilliant and kind man, and a grandfather figure to troubled local youth.”
John was a contemporary figurative painter whose style spanned surrealism, post pop, erotic and neo-mythic genres. Married to Effie, the couple had two children, Ronald and Nigel, who both died tragically young.
“John seemed to have taken to painting to heal from the losses he and Effie endured,” says his exhibition curator, Cath Dickinson, of Notions Vintage. “He remains somewhat of an enigma, with little recorded about his life or artistic endeavours.
“We know that he was a retired Nestle employee, living in Acomb, suspected to have hailed from Omagh, County Tyrone. With no social media or websites to dissect, no records of known influences or potential drivers, the journey of discovery about JP is just beginning.”
Local accounts reveal that he was a much loved go-to grandfather figure to all the children in his street in Foxwood, Acomb, never missing a birthday or Christmas, delivering shortbread and fixing many broken bikes.
In a strange encounter, curator Cath Dickinson, who has been collecting paintings by John for five years, met someone who knew a friend and neighbour of John by chance.
“I discovered that John had been more than a friendly neighbour but amentor to troubled local adolescents and young people who were struggling with the temptations of life in the hedonistic 1990s and 2000s,” says Cath.

“John had a particularly close friend, mentee and muse in ‘Our Amy’, a wonderful young mum who was full of life, and had a fantastic sense of humour. John became Amy’s mentor and confidante and tried to not only guide but also record many of the pivotal moments in her tragically shortened life.”
Exhibition visitors hopefully will be able to discover and share more of the history of John’s painting and subjects. “The main part is in tribute and memory to Amy and John and their bond which transcended generations and societal norms,” says Cath. “John’s works have been likened to Alasdair Gray and Grayson Perry. They span decades and observe war, tragedy, comedy, temptation, love and loss.
After the exhibition in memory of John, Effie and Amy ends on March 6, some of John’s works will be available to buy from notionsvintageyork.com at 6 Aldwark Mews, York, YO1 7PJ.
“This joint exhibition has been both a labour of love and a voyage of discovery for its two curators,” says Richard. “Come and discover the work of two wonderful creative artists and their vibrant contrasting styles and subject matter.”

Billy, who grew up in Sheriff Hutton, near York, studied jazz guitar at the Royal Academy of Music. He also leads the chamber-jazz project Grande Família, whose appearances have taken in top British venues, Scarborough Jazz Festival and a sold-out residency at Pizza Express Jazz Club, Soho.

YORK company Inspired By Theatre has released the first official promotional imagery for next month’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York.
The newly unveiled images form part of a cinematic campaign that reflects director Dan Crawfurd-Porter’s bold, physical and visual approach.
“Shot in a controlled studio environment, the imagery offers a stark and contemporary lens on the characters at the heart of the story,” he says.

Jesus Christ Superstar has taken the most preparation and development of any Inspired By Theatre show. “The stage work has been shaped over several years of planning and refinement,” says Dan.
“From the outset, I was determined that the show should be defined by a strong and distinctive visual language, closely aligned with abstract, physical and emotionally charged storytelling.”
The shoot was led by director and photographer Dan, with creative support from assistant director Freya McIntosh and production designer Gi Vasey. Hair and make-up was delivered by Chloe Pearson, Jasmine Barnard, Gi Vasey, and Freya McIntosh.

“Central to the success of the imagery is the cast themselves, whose sustained character work and commitment to the production’s vision are evident throughout the final images,” says Dan.
“The photoshoot was conceived and executed with the same care as a full-scale production, treating the imagery as an artwork in its own right while remaining fully aligned with the vision of our stage production.
“Rather than functioning solely as promotional material, the images are designed to establish the cinematic world of our show in advance of its arrival on stage.”

YORK theatre company founded in 2022, originally as Bright Light Musical Productions. “What began as a passion project has grown into a vibrant creative community with a distinctive artistic voice and a commitment to ambitious, impactful work,” says director Dan Crawfurd-Porter.
Previous productions, including Green Day’s American Idiot (2024) and RENT (2025), at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, have been praised for their energy, integrity, and polish. Jesus Christ Superstar marks the next evolution in the company’s bold storytelling, opening a landmark 2026 season that also will feature Spring Awakening at Theatre@41, Monkgate, York, from May 20 to 23 and Madness musical Our House at the JoRo in October .
“Inspired By Theatre was built on the belief that theatre can influence, uplift, and spark meaningful change,” says Dan. “The name itself reflects the countless productions, performers, creatives and audiences that continue to inspire and shape the company’s journey.”

“THIS isn’t just another revival; for us, it’s personal,” says Inspired By Theatre director Dan Crawfurd-Porter as the York company prepares to open RENT at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre tomorrow (10/4/2025).
“RENT was the show that opened my eyes to what theatre could truly be, beyond just performance, and beyond just entertainment,” says Dan, recalling his first encounter with Jonathan Larson’s groundbreaking American musical in 2021.
“It fuelled my love for stories that matter and ignited my desire to produce theatre. I discovered community theatre after a crisis point in my own life, joining my first show, Jesus Christ Superstar, at 21.
“That same year, 2021, I saw RENT for the first time, and everything changed. I fell in love with Jonathan Larson’s work, from his early pieces to his role in transforming what musical theatre could say and do.
“It inspired me to create a company with a purpose. We started by producing Tick, Tick… BOOM!, Larson’s semi-autobiographical piece, always with the long-term intention of bringing RENT to life.”
Dan continues: “For Inspired By Theatre as a whole, RENT reflects our core values: community, inclusion, and using theatre as a tool for connection and change. This show allows us to bring those values to the forefront, and create work that inspires, just like RENT once inspired me.”
RENT follows on from Crawfurd-Porter’s July 2024 staging of another iconic American rock musical, Green Day’s American Idiot. “RENT tells a story of love, resilience and artistic defiance, making it as relevant today as it was when it debuted 30 years ago,” says Dan.

Set in the heart of New York City’s East Village at the apex of the AIDS epidemic, RENT follows a group of young artists struggling to survive, create and hold onto hope in the face of uncertainty.
“RENT redefined what musical theatre could be,” says Dan. “It brought rock music, queer voices and the reality of the HIV/AIDS crisis to the mainstream stage with honesty and heart. You can draw a straight line from RENT to shows like Spring Awakening, Next To Normal, Dear Evan Hansen, and Hadestown. It paved the way for modern musical theatre to be bold, raw and real.”
Larson’s musical made its Broadway debut on April 29 1996 and has not dated over the past three decades, reckons Dan. “Homophobia, housing insecurity, the cost of living crisis, cuts to arts funding, and the pressure on young people to ‘make it’ in a gig economy, these are all still with us,” he says. “The show may be set in the ’90s, but its message is absolutely timeless. And that reminder, to love boldly, live fully, and stand by your community, feels more essential than ever.
“RENT celebrates bravery, defiance, creativity and unconditional love. It shows young people at their most vulnerable, but also their most powerful, unafraid to break rules, build community and fight for something better.”
In his directorial role, Dan’s biggest challenge has been to strike a balance between emotional truth and theatricality. “With RENT, you can’t fake it,” he says. “It requires vulnerability and sincerity, every single night. The other challenge has been finding the balance between honouring the original and bringing our own perspective to it, making sure it feels fresh while staying true to Larson’s vision.”
Dan holds no truck with naysayers’ contention that Rent has only good song, the life-measuring Seasons Of Love. “Reducing the score to just one number completely overlooks the musical and emotional richness of the show,” he counters.
“Jonathan Larson created a soundtrack that doesn’t just support the story, it is the story. “Light My Candle and Goodbye Love are two of the finest examples of storytelling through song in musical theatre. One Song Glory is heartbreakingly raw. Take Me Or Leave Me is a powerhouse duet that has become a rite of passage for performers.

“And La Vie Bohème? It’s more than a song, it’s a celebration and a protest. Even the quieter numbers, Halloween, Without You and I’ll Cover You (Reprise), are deeply affecting, layered with vulnerability and truth. “The brilliance of RENT’s score is that it’s urgent, messy and honest, just like the characters themselves. Larson created a musical landscape that’s not only memorable, but profoundly human too.”
Describing the set and costume design for RENT, Dan says: “It’s layered, authentic and curated with so much thought. Days spent painting by a team led by Gi Vasey. A scaffold making a return to the stage but being transformed.
“So many set pieces and props have been built or sourced for this show. There will be no doubt what world the audience has entered into. Our set incorporates real panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt, giving a powerful visual tribute to those lost to HIV/AIDS.
“The costumes are grounded in 1990s’ realism. But they’re not just era-accurate, they’re character-driven. Each look reflects not just the time, but the personality, story and identity of the person wearing it.”
Why should anyone who has not seen RENT see it for the first time, Dan? “Because it’s theatre that hits you in the heart,” he says. “You’ll laugh, cry and maybe leave thinking a little differently about the people around you. It’s the kind of show that stays with you.”
Why should someone who has seen RENT see it again? “Like with every production of RENT, we’re telling this story with new energy and new voices, no version of the show is the same,” says Dan. “This production will move you, challenge you and remind you to measure your life in love.”

“Gi Vasey trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in Performance Design and is a multidisciplinary theatre-maker. She’s a standout talent as Mimi, with a voice and emotional depth that captivate, but her contribution goes far beyond performance. As an experienced scenic designer, Gi has spent entire days painting. Her presence has elevated every aspect of the production.

“Maddie Jones, returning to the stage after a break, has delivered a Maureen that’s bold, eccentric and magnetic. Her RENT audition left no doubt, she had it. Every rehearsal since has confirmed she’s the perfect mix of chaos, charm, and charisma.
“Jess Gardham is a multi-award-winning singer-songwriter with international touring experience and a rich theatre background. Her professionalism, warmth and sheer vocal ability have been a gift to this process.
“Mikhail Lim is well known in the York theatre scene as both a performer and director, and we’re thrilled to finally have him in an Inspired By Theatre production. His stage presence is commanding, his voice outstanding, and he brings an emotional honesty that makes every scene land. “Fen Greatley-Hirsch has one of the most impressive CVs we’ve seen, with experience across Shakespeare, contemporary plays and musicals. “Katie Brier, a trained musical theatre performer (Leeds College of Music and London College of Music), brings not just vocal brilliance but also humour, musical intelligence and an infectious energy to the room. Having worked with her previously in York, we knew she was the perfect fit for this show and company.
“Lucy Plimmer-Clough, with a BA and MA in Music from the University of York, brings exceptional musicianship and vocal strength to the production. Her standout performance in one of RENT’s most iconic musical moments will leave audiences speechless.
“Connie Richards, who was due to play Mimi in another RENT production that was sadly cancelled, was a brilliant surprise at auditions. Her talent is immense, and having someone of her calibre in our ensemble is a testament to just how deep the talent runs in this cast.

“Fernanda Aqueveque Retamal began her theatre journey in Chile in 2001 and trained under renowned director Fernando Cuadra. Performing in a second language and bringing a unique international perspective to the production, Fernanda adds richness and diversity that’s not only rare but perfect for a show like RENT.”
One last question:
Why did you change the company name from Bright Light Musical Productions to Inspired By Theatre, Dan?
“Bright Light Musical Productions was a name chosen quickly in our early days, before we truly knew what we were building. As we grew, developed our voice, and began producing work with real purpose, it became clear that we needed a name that reflected who we are now, not who we were then,” he explains.
“Inspired By Theatre captures the heart of what we do. We’re inspired by the people we work with, the stories we choose to tell and the communities we engage.”

ONCE the pantomime Cat that fainted thrice in Dick Whittington in his 1979 cub days on the professional circuit, Oscar winner Gary Oldman returns to the Theatre Royal to perform Samuel Beckett’s melancholic, tragicomic slice of theatre of the absurd Krapp’s Last Tape in his first stage appearance since the late-1980s.
“York, for me, is the completion of a cycle,” says the Slow Horses leading man. “It is the place ‘where it all began’. York, in a very real sense, for me, is coming home. SAXOPHONIST to the stars Snake Davis will be joined by Hammond organist, composer and vocalist Stu Collingwood for an evening of soul pop and jazz. Davis performs regularly with famous artists at huge venues but is “far happier being himself at Helmsley Arts Centre”.
