The Wizard of York, alias Dan Wood, launches Facebook group to champion “the best coffee shops across this enchanting city”
ESPRESSO Patronum! York’s wandering wizard has conjured up More Java, Less Palaver as his new Facebook group to spill the beans on “the best coffee shops across this enchanting city”.
“It’s a positive online space to share recommendations and highlight local favourites,” says the Wizard of York, alias Dan Wood, introducing www.facebook.com/yorksbestcoffeeshops.
Dan runs The Wizard Walk of York and organises WizardFest, York’s official Festival of Wizardry, where he brings together the city’s most magical businesses for three days of family fun each May half-term.
For almost five years, Dan has been reviewing places to eat in a feature called Fantastic Feasts and Where To Find Them, but now he is turning his attention to liquid refreshment too.
“We are truly spoiled for choice in York, and the group is simply a way to share what’s out there. It’s not limited to coffee either; I’ve already shared great pumpkin lattes, matcha, hot chocolates, chai, tea and more. And of course, all the accompanying cakes too!”
The Wizard Walk is Visit York’s Independent Business of The Year 2026 and, when he is not amazing and amusing his crowds, Dan loves to champion fellow York businesses. He has received messages of support from residents and tourists alike and he delights in helping people find hidden gems and lesser-known coffee shops.
The More Java, Less Palaver group has gained more than 400 followers in only a few days and is being used as a hub for asking questions, such as which places cater for specific dietary needs, and for sharing top picks.
Dan adds: “With up to six tours a day at peak times, I need caffeine and cake in equal measure, so I felt it made sense to let people know where I sup and dine. Now I just need to work out how to make the calories…vanish!
“Thirsty for more? You can join the group on Facebook at www.facebook.com/yorksbestcoffeeshops or by searching More Java, Less Palaver.”
